Internet Explorer has stopped working

J

John King

Having just changed to Vista I'm having a minor problem that defeats me.
My Internet Explorer seems to work OK but if I receive an E Mail with a web
link, when I click on it I get a window "Internet Explorer has stopped
working. a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows
will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" And of
course nothing else happens.
Any light you can throw on this will be appreciated.

If you aren't having the problem if you cut and paste the address, you might
also want to post in the microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail group also.

Thank you I will try.

Use Mozilla Firefox it's more stable,

And doesn't fully integrate. One example: Firefox will not read an M3u
MP3 playlist and launch WMP. It reads the playlist as a text page (some
times with hot links, some times without) of addresses. Each address
that should have already opened WMP and begun the playback play as
a sequence of songs, has to be pasted into the browser window and then
fully dowloaded before playing. There are other integration issues as well.

David, that's no big deal. At least it doesn't crap out as soon as it starts
for a million different reasons.

Ever since I got my new Dell desktop this has been happening to me: IE7 is
getting this "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message as soon as I
start it. I have created a few Internet shortcuts on my desktop to start IE7
with various pages as the initial page (my.yahoo.com, comcast.net,
www.annoyances.org). My home page is my.yahoo.com, but often when I start IE7
it pops this message and stops immediately. Also happens with the comcast.net
shortcut. But when I start the shortcut for www.annoyances.org, it never gets
the error. Then I can navigate anywhere on the web and it stays running.

The other time I get this error is if I start typing a long search into the
Google toolbar search window. After about 16 characters, IE7 freezes
completely and I have to start Task Mgr to kill it. Any ideas?

I just found out about the Windows Problem Reporting tool. Here's the

Jeff,

I have no qualification to attempt an answer for this... as I'm little more
than an end user, but with over 20 years of experience. I personally
remove IE 7 from any PC that I service, Im don't recommend ANY 3rd
party browsers or toolbars, and didn't keep my install of IE7 but a few
weeks when it was foist on me as a "priority" update by MS. My voice
really doesn't belong in the realm of the tech-arena, and I'm less than
thrilled with VISTA, so please take me with a grain of salt and I will try
to provide you with some links to info.

VISTA is interesting, but not ready for prime time IMHO... so it's not
permanently running on any box that I own, though I've been through
two installs personally and a number of my clients are using it.

As best as I can figure, there are serious exceptions that occur when
one installs more than one web browser... and if there are numerous
3rd party toolbars or the browser has been Hi-jacked by Yahoo, Verizon,
MSN, Google, or any other ISP or search software, there are equal issues.

I'm a big fan of MS (until VISTA, which seems like Millenium Edition), and
for that reason I am *extremely* leary about corrupting the system with
3rd party browsers.

My best personal bet is a conflict with a 3rd party toolbar or add-on...
some of which are considered little more than mal-ware.

Using your error codes, I've found some threads on the MS newsgroups.
It appears that there are similar codes for crashes in VISTA's Windows
Explorer as well as IE. Basically, I just Googled your error codes which
seem to be very common among a great deal of varietal crashes, and
posted some links for you to peruse until you get some real help.

Cheers,

I hate to be one of those that says, "I don't have that issue" and can not offer
any help. ;-) But seriously, I'm not moving any of my personal boxes to
VISTA permanently for some time to come... so I'm not much help other
than on older OS's.
Ever since I got my new Dell desktop this has been happening to me: IE7 is

What happens when you simply set each of these as the 'default' home page in IE7 ?
The other time I get this error is if I start typing a long search into the
Google toolbar search window. After about 16 characters, IE7 freezes
completely and I have to start Task Mgr to kill it. Any ideas?

Say Goodbye to the Google toolbar, at least temporarily. Uninstall it.
Then run through the IE7 options and disable all 3rd party plug-ins.

Does your IE7 browser say *anything* in the title bar besides " I E by Microsoft" ?

David,

Thanks much for goign to that effort to uncover the codes. I ran the tool
this a.m. in my pajamas and had to get to work so I have not done those
searches. Your legwork will save me lots of time tonight when I get home.

But I had a good LOL at this response from Dell Tech Support, where I opened
an incident this morning after posting to the MS group:

" I would suggest you to download and install Firefox (one of the best and
the most reliable browser available in market) on this computer. I have given
below the link from where you will be able to download Firefox, free of cost.
The steps to download and install
Firefox are given below:
1. Open the link given below in a new Window.
http://www.download.com/3000-2356_4-10744221.html
2. Click Download Now.
3. Click Save.
4. Save the Firefox file on the desktop.
5. After the file is saved, close all the windows.
6. Double click Firefox file, saved on the desktop.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Firefox. While launching
Firefox, it will ask for your permission to import the Internet Options
(settings) from Internet Explorer. We do not want Firefox browser to use
Internet Explorer settings. We want it to use its own settings. Please check
the
option which to ensure that it uses its own settings.
8. Check the computer with Firefox."

Isn't this hilarious? Especially the editorial comment <<one of the best
and the most reliable browser available in market>> I wonder if Bill G.
knows that Dell tech reps are making these suggestions!

I'll search the links you recommended tonight and let you know how I fare.
Here goes the old my-time-is-valuable-down-the-rathole exercise.

Anyone who thinks they can remove IE is a fool. The best that happens is
the shortcuts are removed.
Go to Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/internet explorer (no
add-ons). Most likely you will not have a problem. That narrows it down to
some add-on that you have installed.

Of course it's *free*. So are IE and Netscape... and all the other malware
plug-ins, tool-bars. and browser hi-jackers installed courtesy of ISPs.

Something tells me you were talking to someone in India who's in 'level one'
tech support, and isn't exactly sitting along side those who pay his/her salary
and owe their very existence to Microsoft.

I really am surprised at the Dell rep.... they have a *great* deal of money
invested in Microsoft products, and this essentially represents absolutely
ZERO effort to try and remedy your real issues.... it's nothing more than
an effort to turn your attention away from the issue and leave the corrupt
problem in place by hiding it, when FF could have cause it.

The steps to download and install
Firefox are given below:
1. Open the link given below in a new Window.
http://www.download.com/3000-2356_4-10744221.html

Grrrooaaaaannnnnnnnn.................. :-\ Oh well. It's a good browser,
it just (like all other invasions of the MS OS) doesn't always play nicely.
Isn't this hilarious? Especially the editorial comment <<one of the best
and the most reliable browser available in market>> I wonder if Bill G.

Yes... more than hilarious. I don't know of a single PC that has installed
a third party (to MS) browser that didn't encounter problems when once
again trying to use Internet Explorer. That's my experience -- it doesn't
have to be yours and many people will tell me that I'm crazy -- but my
experience tells me there are always issues when you start altering the
OS or the Microsoft IE.

Obviously though.. if you like it, you need to tweak it and never use IE again.

Personally, I'd go back to IE6 by uninstall both of these monsters along with
any and all toolbars and plugs. Then I would manually go the MS Windows
Update, select "custom," and permanently hide the IE7 download. But again,
that's just me.

If you're permanently on VISTA, you _can't_ remove IE7, but you can dump
all the toolbars and 3rd party plug-ins. IE7 on a new VISTA machine also
*forces* you to leave at least one search bar preference, and I can't remember
if that search bar can be turned off or removed from the IE tools palette.
I'll search the links you recommended tonight and let you know how I fare.
Here goes the old my-time-is-valuable-down-the-rathole exercise.

If your "Microsoft Internet Explorer" has been hi-jacked by Yahoo! or another
ISP or search engine and altered the title bar to reflect such, you may still
have issues... even without Mozilla.

Essentially Geoff, here's what we're saddled with... people think they're
going to suddenly become free of viruses or at least be less susceptible
to them if they don't use a Microsoft browser. It's like a bad wive's tale.

Been away for a while...busy holiday season compounded by my wife's mother
dying. Here's the deal-breaker: my wife works from home, is a federal gov't
lawyer, and must of course use email and Word[im]Perfect for all her
documents. Turns out that the agency's email system is Lotus-Notes based and
their ActiveX control for sending mail (at least in her agency's build) does
not work in Vista, so she can read mail but not send. Their official
solution? Use Firefox. So we did and life is wonderful for the past month.
Yahoo and Google toolbars are working fine. IE7 is still shutting down when
I happen to use it by accident.

I'm sure we could work on it Jeff, but if you're happy with the way things are,
there's no need to rock the boat after finally getting the compatibility with your
wife's workplace straightened out.
