"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

T

tahir_hussein12

Hi all

I have tried all I can do to fix this problem, to no avail.

I am running XP SP2 with the latest updates. I have 2 accounts,
me as admin and my son as a limited user.

Recently he has started getting this error regularly:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

When I ask for more detail it tells me:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 604245d0

I have run Ad-aware and Spybot and the system is clean.

Any help would be appreciated... thanks

Tahir.

Hi Tahir :)

"Unknown" type errors are often caused by some type of scumware on the
system. In addition to updating and running your AV, download, install and
run the programs below in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled. This will
remove any scumware you may have. Some forms of malware can replicate
itself repeatedly if not removed properly, so even if you have already run
some programs, run them again according to the information below. Follow
all instructions carefully:

First, Clear the TIF's and empty the recycle bin:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
(The TIF size should be set to 50-60 MB. Larger caches tend to be more prone
to trouble)

If so, then do the following:

Download and install BHODemon from
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
Your problem may be caused by a bad BHO.

Most importantly, download install and run CWShredder here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
and About Buster, which searches for hidden .dlls that recreate the malware.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html
Then visit these two sites to test for parasites and help basic cleaning:
On-Line Check
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
and
Quick-Fix Protocol.
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.php
Basically, throw everything here at your "infection".

Then download, install and immediately update these two programs before
running:

AdAware SE - Update immediately after installing

SpyBot S &D - Update immediately after installing

Microsoft Windows Antispyware Program (Beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Download pocket killbox from Download pocket killbox from
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe
and put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Also download, install, and run HiJackThis - it is one of the most important
tools to clean your system of scumware. Follow the instructions
carefully:

(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill

enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:

Went to that site and you seemed to have confused things by posting a log
from a computer that does not have the same problem you do - and the expert
there analyzed *that* one, instead of yours. I'm not a HJT log expert, but
one line really stands out to me on your log:

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) -
Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f
"%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)

That's a packet sniffer!? http://winpcap.polito.it/docs/man/html/main.html
Unless this computer is on a business-type network, where a sysadmin would
want to monitor your computer, I'd be suspicious.

I'd try again to post your output log to the forum here for analysis and
feedback by the
parasite experts:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/
Or one of the other HijackThis Logs forums listed here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.html

Jon, sorry if I have confused things.

The reality is that both logs are from the same computer, one run as a
user who does not have the IE problem and the other run as the user
with the problem. I thought it would be helpful to have both as a
compare might show something.

One of the Admin's has just asked me to try something which I am going
to do as soon as I get home tonight.

Tahir.
