Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

I have IE6 on Win2000. Recently, I started getting the above message when
trying to open some video files, but not other video files. I recently
turned automatic updates back on and unchecked the box to disallow third
party BHO's, but problem continues intermittently.

Specific error message is:

App Name = ieexplore.exe
App Ver = 6.0.2800.1106
Mod Name = jscript.dll
Mod Ver = 5.6.0.6626
Offset = 00061920

Any suggestions for fix or workaround?

Thanks

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Thanks, Frank. I'll take a look at some of these sites.

In addition to changing my IE setting to prevent downloads of third party
BHO's (a suggestion I found in this group), I also reduced my privacy setting
from Medium to Low (regarding cookies), based upon another suggestion I found
in this group. Things seem better now, although I'm not certain the problem
is gone away completely.

Do you agree with this privacy setting reduction, or is that risky?
Also, can you tell me if a BHO was added to a particular document I was
trying to open, before I changed the IE setting, would that BHO still be on
that document if I went back to it a week from now and tried to open it
again? Or, did the setting change take it off completely?

Cookies are not dangerous, but they can be used to track (some of) your
browsing. This will only track when you browse to sites that look for that
particular cookie. I have mine set to Medium just because that's the
default and I haven't seen a reason to change it. Medium has never caused
me a problem.

If opening a document installed a BHO and you remove the BHO if you open the
document again it will again install the BHO. However, the only way this
can happen is if the program the document is open in has the ability to
interpret and run code contained in the document. Programs like Word and
Excel can do this, but Notepad and WordPad cannot. There is a setting
somewhere in Office programs not to run macros, but I don't know where
anymore.
