Internet explorer does'nt work anymore!!

Hello everyone,
I desperately need help. I am a dutch internet explorer user and this is
what happened.
Monday, I was surfing the web and at one point I visited an american site. I
don't remember which one. Suddenly all kinds of pop-ups started filling up my
screen.
I deleted all of them and than I discoverd that some kind of toolbar was
atached to my internet screen. I went to my configuration and opened the list
of software.
Once there, I discoverd a few little programmes that I and no member of my
family ever installed on the computer. It was some kind of spyware, adware or
something like it. Some I have been able to remove manually, but a few
could'nt be removed because windows could'nt find the source or something
like that.
So I dediced to open my virus scan program and let it remove those programs
that were left. So I ran a scan and several dangerous elements were deleted.
A few he could'nt delete because they were protected by windows. They were
named "trojan horse" and other names like that so I thought these could be
dangerous virusses and programmes. The virus scan said, it could delete them
but after I reset my computer. So I did. But now internet explorer can't open
any webpage.
I can get the internet explorer screen, and a startpage (which I did'nt
install but that anoying site did probably). But every time I want to visit
a webadress it does some work and than there's nothing, just the same page.
So I thougt the internet connection was broken. Strangely msn messenger does
work so the internet connection is fine. I concluded that it was the program
of internet explorer itself. A friend of mine send me an alternative internet
program called "Mozilla Firefox" and I'm forced to use it if I want to visit
the internet but I would much rather prefer internet explorer. My friend
suggested that internet explorer could be experiencing problems because with
the spyware I also could have deleted some ddl files (whatever they might be)
and this is causing explorer to have problems. Anyway, this is my story.
Does anyone have any idea what I could try to make explorer work again!!
Thanks for any help, I would very much appreciate it.

Greetings from Maaike.

Here is what I would do if I were you:

1. Install either the Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox browser.
2. After you install and configure them, go and download these three
programs, update and run them:

A. Lavasoft's Ad-aware
B. Safer Networking's Spybot Search and Destroy
C. Microsoft's Antispyware

If you use a Mozilla browser, you won't get pop-ups. Both browsers block
them by default. If you scan and clean your machine with all 3 of those
utilities listed above, you should have your system cleaned off.

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
