Whenever I get online using Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0, the browser
does not close when I go to X out of it, does anyone know why?
Instead it just makes a "bonk" sound, and no error message or anything, as
though it stopped responding, and I have several times had the automated
error reporting send in reports after I had to terminate the program via the
Task Manager.

You had your computer connected to the Internet in the past? Did
you always have the firewall enabled?

I guess not. If I guessed correctly, please read on.

The current statistics for the survival time of an unpatched,
unprotected PC connected to the Internet is 16 minutes to the
first infection. Usually, after a while, such PCs harbor a whole
zoo of viruses, worms, spyware, adware, and, most insidiously,
spam spewers. The experts' designation for such a computer is,
"zombie".

You will find it very difficult to remove all of these, but if
you want to try, a good start is SpyBot, followed by a good,
up-to-date virus scanner (for example, AVG). After that you may
have to perform a Winsock repair or an IP stack repair, as
described in http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm.
