Internet explorer and ms word problem

First can I say sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place.

Here is one problem I have been unable to solve at work, its driving nuts
and after 2 days still have no solution.

Normally when browsing a website that has a link to a word document,
clicking the word document opens word inside IE either in a new window or
the same one, with the attachment loaded.

Now the problem.

User clicks on the document link, a new browser window opens, along the
bottom you can see it opening the url of the attachment. Now once the
attachment has downloaded the IE window just closes without any
intervention.

Anyone else seen this, and found a cure.

The pc was installed about 2 weeks ago, and as far as I know hasnt been
right since but they failed to log a support call. I have checked the IE
popup blocker and its off, and no strange programs are listed in add/remove
programs to block popups. MS antispyware runs clean.

OS is XP SP2 with all the current updates installed. The PC is part of our
WSUS GPO so gets updated automatically without user intervention.

Thanks fot the reply Rob, Yes the pc has Office 2003 installed. I spotted
the reg keys under HKLM\software\classes , I looked at the keys and see a
editflags entry that was set to 0. I did an MS search and set it to 1000 as
suggested by a KB whos number escapes me as I am at home now but the prob is
still there.

I have tried a repair install, perhaps I need to try a complete uninstall
and reinstall, I'll try that tomorrow.

Hi Manny,

I suppose the PC has had Office installed? You could try re-installing. I
think there are installation options to provide backwards compatibility with
earlier versions of Word.

I am looking at my registry settings for .doc and it is showing a number of
event handlers
Word.Document.6
Word.Document.8
WordDocument
WordPad.Document.1

I am only guessing so I could be wrong.
Another guess would be that there is something wrong with your OLE
libraries, so ensure you have done a windows update and all the latest
updates have been made to your new puter.
