Internet Explorer 6 and XP SP2 installed but not recognized

I have latest versions of subject programs (IE 6.02...) up and running
without significant problems for sometime. In trying install another program
(smart card reader software for use with citrix) I get the following error
message "IE 4.01 or later must be installed, update your machine blah blah"
and the installer shuts down.

This is the first program that interfaces with IE that I've ever installed
that this has happened. I'm guessing that somewhere along the line I've
messed up the registry entry for Internet Explorer. I don't have the
technical skills to find and check/edit this registry entry. Any
suggestions? I was thinking/hoping maybe a simple remove and reinstall XP
SP2 would fix this? Any comments, suggestions, ideas?

TIA

By the way Internet Explorer doesn't display in the control panel/add-remove
program list although XP SP2 does.

It's possible the UserAgent entry in the registry of that computer is the
issue. The web site looks for that to see what browser you are using and to
change it's web page display as appropriate.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings

For WinXP and IE 6 the value should be - Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0;
Win32)

More info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827326/en-us - see the
Resolution section.

The entry you say it should be does exist for the registry entry at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\User Agent

So that must not be the problem. Although the space above in "User Agent"
above seems odd when no other items in that list of registry entries have a
space (e.g. "UrlEncoding").
