Internet explore-Outlook express malfunction

Hello,
I have IE ver 6 and have developed a problem.
I also use FireFox which I have currently uninstalled. I connect to the
internet using AOL and have been of at least 5 years without a problem.
Now my problem, I am unable to surf using internet explorer or AOL. In AOL
the links do not work and I am unable to browse. I am however able to check
email.
When signed on to AOL. I often use Firefox as my web browser which works
great. But, I am unable to use Internet Explorer. I keep getting a message
that it has encountered a problem and will be shut down. When not online I
can open Internet explorer without a problem. Also, when trying to open
Outlook express, I receive the message, Outlook express could not be started
because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded.
I have run updated antivirus, spyware software as well as have my firewall
updated.
I have even reinstalled AOL and downloaded IE 6 with upgrades.
Much thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this will take care of non-OE issues, but:

<qp>
Outlook express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded.
</qp>

From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store. Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder. You
will lose your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news
servers, but it might get you into OE. Note: The DBX file are hidden files
in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx. You should now get into OE. Try importing the messages from the
folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use one of these
tools to extract the messages:

DBXtract:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXpress: {much faster for large files}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

I know zilch about AO'Hell', but for your OE problem see:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/errors.htm#550relay

You might try asking about the browser problems in an appropriate group?
IE6 Specific Newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser

IE General newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general
HTH?

As Bruce indicates, the message store in OE is corrupt. If it starts after
deleting folders.dbx, then go to File | Identities and set up a new
Identity, which will give a new uncorrupt message store. Also see points 2
and 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx
