Last night I upgraded to Windows XP Home from my much-
maligned Millenium Edition (which was the original OS when
I bought the computer; it eventually crashed a couple of
months ago). This installation of XP was flawless. I
later installed MSN8 (already a subscriber) and logged
in. Each time I logged into the internet, I received an
error message that the computer would be shutting down in
1 minute 30 seconds. The message said:

Remote Procedure Call terminated unexpectedly

Initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

How can I rectify this?????!!!!

There are thousands of nasty computer viruses/worms looking for unprotected
computers. Your computer can be infected within a few milliseconds the moment
an internet connection is established if your computer is not properly secured.

Apparently, your computer is now infected with the W32.Blaster.Worm or one of its variants.
This happened because you have not been using an internet connection firewall and have
apparently neglected to install the critical updates available at the Windows Update website.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
remotely compromise a computer running Microsoft Windows and
gain complete control over it. You can help protect your computer
by installing this update from Microsoft.

You have been hit by the Blast worm or a variant.
Immediately on boot go to Control Panel - Admin tools - Services.
Double click on the upper entry Remote Procedure call, and on the
Recovery page change 'First fail' to 'Restart service'. click Apply.
Repeat for Second fail.

Then get the firewall into action against reinfection after you have
cleaned up - Network Connections, right click the one to the internet,
Properties and check the top box on the Advanced page.

Now go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm#worm
for instructions and a script to clean up
