internet email and exchange problem O2K2

Hi All,

Sorry about the cross post but I am having a strange problem with one user
in my office and I am not sure which one to post in.

I have setup all users to have an internet email account (default) and an
exchange mailbox. The user goes to the internet and gets their own mail and
then it is delivered to their exchange mailbox as opposed to a PST file.
This is all very straight forward and workds great for all except one user.

This users email that is bound for the internet, sits in his outbox forever.
I have tried numerous things to get this email to go and there are a few
ways but none that are really acceptable. I can send and recieve if I
remove the exchange account from the list, I can send and recieve if I add
a regular PST file to the list of folders and deliver to it instead of the
exchange folders. But if I try to set the email delivery to the exchange
mailbox then the email no longer leaves the outbox.

Here is a list of other things I have tried but none of them worked:
- remove AV protection from email
- uninstall outlook and re-install
- uninstall office and re-install
- page by page review of settings to ensure exact match between working
client and non-working client (they were the same)

Is there perhaps some settings in exchange that can be changed?

FYI: Outlook 2002 + Echange 2000

Thanks,

Calvin X

What is the default mail account?
What happens if you speciftically pick the POP account to send from in a new
message?
What SMTP server are you using in the POP account?
Can the Exchange server reach the Internet to send mail?

NB: I do not recommend your configuration - I would have Exchange handle all
Internet mail for your company. If you don't have a registered internet
domain name, get one. You're creating a lot more work for yourself & your
users, they can't use OWA, you can't do centralized
antivirus/antispam/attachment blocking filtering, etc....

What SMTP server are you using in the POP account?
our ISP's email server
Can the Exchange server reach the Internet to send mail?
no this doesn't work. I tried to set it up before but using exchange to
forward mail to our ISPs SMTP server does not seem to work.

My BOSS does not want this kind of maintance overhead so we are stuck with
this config. There is no problem running this config on every other machine
only on this particular one.

The SMTP server for the ISP is fine because i can send mail when not using
exchange. Its only when I introduce the exchange account hat I begin to
have issues.

Does that 'stick' ?

Have you tried creating a new mail profile?
our ISP's email server

If you can't use their SMTP server as a smarthost, and can't send mail out
directly via DNS lookup/SMTP, you can use someone else's for a nominal
annual fee, generally. Frankly, if you can use a POP account to send mail
via your ISP's SMTP server, you can use Exchange to send mail via that same
SMTP server in 99% of cases. You may need to authenticate or use an
alternate port, but it can be done. They clearly aren't blocking you.

.....and this is lower maintenance overhead exactly *how*? It adds a lot of
complexity and potential problems to what should be a simple setup, in my
view. Well, it's not my network. :)

Well, mixing 'n matching can cause a lot of problems/headaches, and I don't
recommend it. Still, you may be able to get it to work if you try creating a
new mail profile for this user.
