Internet dies overnight

I connect to the internet via a cable modem and router; my machine is
running XP home, SP2. When I get to the machine in the morning my internet
connection doesn't work. Doing "repair" on the connection sometimes gets me
going again, but more usually I have to reboot. All the lights on the
router and cable modem indicate that the connection is working properly.

I have disabled the software firewall but the problem still occurs. I'll be
most grateful for any help. Thanks & good wishes to all.

check the power settings on your nic in device
manager/double click NIC/power tab - is it set to "turn
off this device"?
you may want to check general power options as well in
control panel.settings and options vary from one machine
to another.

Thank you for what seemed an exciting suggestion -- alas, "turn off this
device" was not enabled, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Many
thanks -- sure hope there are other suggestions out there.

You can keep the firewall enabled.

If the problem happens three days in a row, call the cable company -
it is their problem. - RM

even though they will deny it... after a day or so things will magically
return to normal.

Bob,

Before rebooting, try "ipconfig / release" then "ipconfig /renew".

Also, make sure the problem isn't your ISP. Get good diagnostic data to
determine 1) where the problem is, and 2) when the problem occurs.

I use PingPlotter <http://www.pingplotter.com/>, which gives you a graphic
display, over time, of a traceroute to a destination. If you setup ping plotter
to repeatedly ping a nearby server, in the morning you will be able to see when
the connection went down, and what node (your router, your ISP, what) is not
responding.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Make a copy of your firewall log: it might show them something. - RM

I too had that problem and was told by sprint to turn off my monitor
power saver and my hard disk power down.

It worked

Take a look at this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article and
see if it sounds like what you are dealing with:
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 828940

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;828940

I've had this problem for months and just found this
article, hopefully Microsoft support with provide the
hotfix; I've just requested it from them.

interesting, i wonder if it applies to non-wireless cable modems as well?

I think I've got it fixed. Steps taken:

1. Disabled 1394 connection which was not connected physically to anything.

2. Uninstalled free edition of Zone Alarm (as distinct from merely keeping
it shut down). After the problem disappeared reinstalled Zone Alarm. Problem
still gone when ZA is running.

3. Checked the "UPnP Framework" box as an exception to Windows Firewall.

4. Disabled Windows Firewall in favor of Zone Alarm.

Why or whether any of these changes had any effect I do not know; all I do
know is that I've been up and running for 2-1/2 days without any
interruption of my internet connection. Incidentally, the machine is
connected to the router by an ethernet cable; the wireless router capability
is used by my laptop.

Good wishes to all and thanks for the many suggestions I've received.

Thanks for posting back.

I will also post back results to testing this approach

Cheers!
