Internet connectivity

I have a wired land connection through a cable modem on my home PC. I don't
have a router. I have a friend's laptop and am unable to get a wireless
connection in my area. I am trying to use my wired PC connection but am
unable to connect. It says it's connected but I can't get online. Do I have
to assign separate metric numbers or.......?

Thanks - help is appreciated!

what do you mean by "unable to get a wireless connection in my
area"? Are you trying to connect to someone else's router?

how many NICs on your machine? what NICs are these? are you trying
to bridge these after establishing an ad hoc connection between two
wireless NICs?
