internet Connectivity Stops Working

E

EC

I have a similar problem, but I'm not sure it is the same. My internet
connection seems to suddenly go dead after working OK for some time after
boot-up. I have to re-boot several times a day to reset whatever is
happening. I have noticed that the pop-up message when I mouse over the
network connection icon in the tray says "Local and Internet" when things are
working, and it says "Local only" when the internet suddenly stops working.
Some web sites seem to invoke this problem more than others, but not every
time. For example, I have been able to view my Hotmail email, but I can
rarely get through the log-in on the Yahoo email web site.

It is important to note that there is another possibly related issue where
the PC will suddenly restart while I am browsing the internet. This is a
more rare occurrence, but may be related.

Setup: Brand new desktop (Dell Inspiron) with cable internet connection. No
wireless router - I connect to the cable modem directly with an ethernet
cable. The PC is running Windows Vista home edition, and the network card is
from Nvidia.

History: This problem has been present right out of the box. I have updated
the NIC driver (same result). I have tried to roll the driver back to an old
version, but couldn't find one to download that is older than the one that
the PC shipped with. From the NIC properties, I tried disabling QoS Packet
Scheduler, Ipv 6, and the topology items (same result). I also tried the
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" solution (same
result).

If anyone can help with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

I did but the only driver available is an update. I installed that update,
but had the same result. I read on some other posts that it was worthwhile
to roll the driver back to an old version, but I was not able to find an old
version of the driver to download. The only drivers I have are the version
that the PC shipped with and the update, neither of which seems to fix this
problem.
Any other ideas?

I have the same problem. As of now it is working by disable IPv6 and reduce
MTU in my D-Link router from 1500 to 1452. Hope this will help.

E

EC

I tried both of those those.
The following info might help debug this issue. I did a ipconfig/all with
the internet connection working, and then again after it stopped working.
After it stopped working, there was a listing for a IPv6 address, but IPv6 is
disabled. Please reply if anyone has ideas. Thanks.

is there a power management setting in device manager for the NIC
that allows the computer to turn of the card to save power? turn
off power management if that is the case.

did this computer come with Norton or some other product? if yes,
uninstall it for now to rule out interference from that.

I can tell you that the only solution I found for this was to completely
uninstall Norton (using the Norton uninstall program that i downloaded). I
am not sure what the interference is from Norton, and have found nothing on
the Norton site to help. I do know that my Vista laptop now connects, but
not sure if it will stay connected.

to roll the driver back to an old version, but I was not able to find an old

Thanks!

I have disabled Windows from powering down the NIC card. That didn't solve
the problem. I ran the Norton uninstall program and that didn't change
anything either. There doesn't seem to be any trace of any Norton software
on the PC.

One thing that I noticed is that I can visit some web pages with no problem.
But certain sites seem to cause the network connection to fail, and then I
have to re-boot to get it to work again. The yahoo mail site is one of these
sites that causes the onset of the issue.

Does anyone else have any other ideas? I am close to the point of trying to
return the computer. Thanks for the suggestions so far...

I can tell you that the only solution I found for this was to completely
uninstall Norton (using the Norton uninstall program that i downloaded). I
am not sure what the interference is from Norton, and have found nothing on
the Norton site to help. I do know that my Vista laptop now connects, but
not sure if it will stay connected.

is there a power management setting in device manager for the NIC

did this computer come with Norton or some other product? if yes,
uninstall it for now to rule out interference from that.

I tried both of those those.
The following info might help debug this issue. I did a ipconfig/all with
the internet connection working, and then again after it stopped working.
After it stopped working, there was a listing for a IPv6 address, but IPv6 is
disabled. Please reply if anyone has ideas. Thanks.

Barb-
The Yahoo mail web site seems to be the only one that regularly 'activates'
this problem (~95% of the time). Other web sites do this from time-to-time,
but not as consistently. Note that I do not even need to log into the Yahoo
mail page - if I only visit the site, that page seems to load and the browser
keeps working. From then until reboot, the internet will not work.

I appreciate your reply, but I cannot understand it. I think the formatting
and punctuation of your message got filtered somehow, making the sentences
run together. Can you please re-post a bit more clearly (spelling, grammar,
etc)?
Thank you very much.

I am having the exact same problem. I just bought a new HP Pavilion
yesterday and am having the same problem out of the box. The computer works
great, and when online every website I visit I have no problem with, except
for YAHOO. I can get to the yahoo home page ok, but once in the mail my
computer slows and then eventually times out. I am running Vista. The only
fix I have found is to restart the computer. Tonight I am going to uninstall
all the yahoo add ons install firefox. I have a feeling it may be an
internet explorer issue or some type of yahoo problem. I also installed CA
Security Suite so that may be an issue as well. I will post tomorrow to let
you know if anything has worked. If anyone else has a fix, please let me
know. I don't want to have to return this computer. I appreciate any help.
Thanks!

what do you see in the event logs/event viewer?

what happens if you open a new browser window and try to go to
www.google.com when this happens?

what happens if you open an elevated command prompt and type

tracert google.com

if the message is note found type in

ipconfig /flushdns

let us know exactly what you have to do

Barb, I will try to respond to your questions accordingly:
what do you see in the event logs/event viewer? - I am not sure how to do this.
what happens if you open a new browser window and try to go to
www.google.com when this happens? - I am unable to open any other websites once I have been to yahoo mail. My internet completely stops working, unless I restart my computer.
what happens if you open an elevated command prompt and type
tracert google.com - I do not know how to do this either.
if the message is note found type in
ipconfig /flushdns - Same as above.

Please let me know how I should proceed using your suggestions.
Unfortunately, I am not so great with computers. I do know that I should not
be having this problem and am very unhappy with Vista.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Thank you for the attempt though.
What check marks are you referring to? I never had to check anything? I
turned my computer on and went to IE explorer then typed in www.yahoo.com,
from there I went to mail, and the site slows down then eventually times out.
Every other website works perfectly. Your problem must be something
different from the one described earlier and the one I am describing. I
appreciate your help, but I can't follow what you are saying.

TG-
I feel your pain. My issue (sounds exactly the same as yours) occurs for
both IE and Firefox. If you resolve this issue by means other than this
thread, please post your solution in this discussion (I plan to do the same).
Thanks...

Here are my replies to your questions:
1) I'm not sure how to view the event logs/event viewer - can you provide
instructions?
2) I have the same behavior as TG. Once I visit the Yahoo mail site, I can
no longer access any web page from any browser, new or already opened. A
reboot is required to restore internet access.
3) Here is the tracert results when the internet connection seems to work:

After attempting everything I could think of I uninstalled my internet
security package. I had CA Internet Security Suite 2007. It worked fine on
my old computer, which was XP. Once uninstalled, my internet was working
fine, I was able to go to Yahoo and Yahoo Mail w/o any slowness. Before I
went to bed I downloaded a trial version of Kaspersky Internet Security
Package to test and see what would happen. Once installed I went back to
Yahoo Mail and it seemed to be working fine. It was a little slower, but
nothing I couldn't deal with. Does anyone have any feedback on Kaspersky?
Good or Bad?

TG, you are my hero.
I too uninstalled CA 2007, and the problem cleared up. I installed the free
ZoneAlarm - you should check that out. I will also check with my ISP, who
was supplying CA2007 for free to see if they have a (truly) Vista-compatible
version. Also, I hear that there is a free open source anti-virus tool
called ClamWin, which I will try to use if I cannot get a newer CA security
package to work.

Thanks!
