hello. today I just changed my internet service from DSL to Cable, ISP named
Time warner cable. I have 2 windows XP professional service pack 2s, a cale
modem, and a Netgear router. when I used DSL, and connected 2 computers on
the netgear router, it worked perfectly fine, but low speed, so we switched
to cable, hoping it will be faster.. and soon as the guy from time warner
cable connects the new cable modem to our router, he says it doesnt work and
told me to try and just left. well I went to netgear homepage, searched in
google, and I did everything I could but could not do it. If I connect the
modem directly to one computer(this one), it works.
please help, we have no one else to depend on but this community.
thanks in advance. -kevin-

Try resetting the router. Turn it off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

Since you had a DSL connection, there's a good possibility that
your Netgear router was configured to use PPPoE to establish an
internet connection.

To check whether this is the case you would need to access the
router's web interface. Check the documentation that came with
your router on how this is done. If your router came with an
installation CD you might want to run the setup program from
that CD to correctly configure your router. Another option
would be to hold down the router's reset button to restore its
default settings.

If you have any questions, include the make and model number of
your router in your response.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to post your
question to the XP networking newsgroup.

I'm not sure whether you are questioning whether that router works with
cable, or whether you are looking for help in setting it up.

If the former, I have the same router, and I can assure you that it works
fine with my cable connection.

Regarding setting it up, I'm away from home at the moment, and can't readily
check it to help you.

Kevin,

Log into the Netgear router, and check the IP settings. The DSL most likely
required that the IP settings be configured for PPPOE. The cable modem
doesn't require this type of authentication, and should be set for DHCP.
After this is complete, reboot the cable modem, and check the status page on
the Netgear device. If it shows connected, however you still cannot get out
to the Internet, check the DNS addresses. Although the Netgear should pick
these addresses up dynamically, it may be necessary to input them by hand;
you can obtain them from Roadrunner.

Hope this helps............

Here are a few things you can try to get your computers
connected.

There's a reset button on the back of your router right next to
the antenna. Using a pointed object, hold down the button for
at least ten seconds. That should reset the router to the
default settings. Restart any computers that are connected to
the router.

If that doesn't work you can change the router's settings
through the web interface. Take a look at this article for more
info.

How to configure internet access on a NETGEAR router for Cable
connection
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101668.asp

Note: I think you'll find that http://192.168.1.1 will apply to
your router.

The bottom line is that you need to configure the router so
that on the Basic Settings page it's set to not require a
logon.

Once you've correctly configured the router, you need to renew
the IP addresses on each computer. The easiest way to do this
is to restart each computer. You can also renew the IP address
by opening a command prompt window and entering ipconfig /renew
at the prompt. To open a command prompt window look under
Accessories on your Start menu.

Here are a couple of Netgear web sites you may find helpful.
