internet connection speed extremely slow

i have an cable connection to the internet of 600k +, and i am receiving
extremely slow download speeds (5k) upstairs on my brothers laptop on the
same network he is receiving no problem...which leaves me to believe its to
do with settings on this PC can anyone help me please? any help greatly
appriciated

How do your brothers, and your, computers connect to the cable modem? If thru a
router (and how far from the router is each computer), do the lights on the
router indicate a 100M Full Duplex connection being used by your connection?
What is the Media Type setting for your network adapter (Local Area Connection
Properties - Configure - Advanced tab)?

If the problem is not physical (speed / duplex setting used by the network
adapter), then the DSLReports Tweak Test might help:
