internet connection sharing

I have 2 computers networked, sharing internet connection (cable, no hub or
router). I recently lost internet access on the client (Win98se). Or so I
thought... I can still listen to streaming internet radio with Winamp but I
can't connect with IE, Netscape, AVG, AdAware or WinMX. The network works,
the computers can see each other, the gateway (WinXP Pro with Zone Alarm) has
internet connection.

Why can't I connect with these types of programs when I obviously have an
internet connection since I get streaming audio?
