Internet Connection Sharing - Speed is faster on networked laptop than dsl-connected pc

I have a strange problem with my internet connetion sharing setup, I
wonder if anyone has any ideas on:

My Desktop is connected to a USB adsl modem on a 2mb connection.
Internet Connection Sharing is switched on to allow my laptop to
connect to the deskop via wifi to access the internet.

When I download anything from my laptop it is 3-4x faster than on the
desktop, for example accessing the same website to download a file on
the laptop will give me approx 200kbps downloads, while the desktop
peaks at 70kbps.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is, and how to speed up
my desktop's connection.

Many thanks for any ideas,

Dean.
