internet connection sharing performance issue

something very odd is happening. i have a small network (a couple of windows
and a linux box) which share a 56k modem on a windows 2000 computer.

up until 2 days ago, everything was fine. then for no apparant reason, the
performance of the internet connection (from the client PC's only) has
completely gone to crap. about half the time, the clients can still access
web pages, but 404 errors and incredable slowness are crippling. it kinda
works, but it's unusable. the server has no problem accessing the web at
full speed, it's just the clients.

after trying various things i have found that it's the internet connection
sharing on the server (win2k) machine that's gone; i put in a proxy and all
the clients lapped it up, they could access the internet at full speed
again, with no problems. i ran virus scanners, spyware removers, etc all of
which came up with nothing. so i'm certain there's some problem with the
server's internet sharing.

unfortunatly running a proxy isn't viable, as i have to turn off the web
server (also on the win2k box) for it to run.

has anyone encountered this problem before?

thanks

Rimu

Run perfmon and check the counters for the network interface on your
ICS machine. Check the event log for problems. Run IPCONFIG/ALL
from the command line and verify that the returned settings are
what they are suppose to be.

below is the entire output from ipconfig /all. it doesn't contain anything

the 'system' event log has recently started showing this error occasionally.
it's timing doesn't seem to relate to client's requests for the internet,
though.

I am paradise cable internet and have started experiencing the same
problem in the last 2-3 days. Seems like it is a problem with
Paradise? If anyone else has similar problem and has solved it then
would love to hear from you.

Thanks

IT MAY BE WORTH READING THIS

My suggestion is that this is a common problem and users should call their cable providers for a replacement. Indications on broadband forums suggest the Com21 may have a firmware fault as settings do not fix this problem and paradise can not trace a fault. If anyone does however have a self-check-and-repair utility for cable modems it would be handy to know

I have exactly the same problem with my paradise cable internet (Telstra clear) even running with a Windows 2003 Server. Paradise settings are all manually set in the PC (e.g. DNS etc) in every fashion so they are fixed. All paradise cable installations have a fixed IP address and run now at 256+Kbps. I am continualling right-clicking on the network icon on the server and choosing "repair" which automatically fixes the broken connections every time. I have rung Paradise (Telstra-Clear) who state that there is no problem on the cable network

Our server also hosts internet sites which are never lost from the outside world so we know visiting users are getting to the web pages on our server 100% of the time. This is a new PC - we had the same problem on a Windows XP Pro pc. The problem is from the other end when we on the server or a network PC try to access the internet it will loose connection between 5 and 30 minutes randomly but every time

Most paradise cable modems are COM21 Inc ComPORT modems model CP2100. I notice their internet site (www.com21.com) was not available when I last attempted to visit for updates. From speaking to Telstra/Clearnet/Paradise/Saturn technicians they are installing completely different modems in new installations.

The CP2100 is basically a "dumb" DSL modem with no user http interface so you can not browse the modem for status etc other than watch the lights. I found it is always the "RD" (receive data) light that fails to respond whilst the TD (transmit data) light always functions. The link and power LCD's remain constantly on. So it is the requested "Recieve Data" that is failing to function

Note: Driverguide which is perhaps the largest driver/manufacturer linking site does not even mention COM21 or the modem
