Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) problem with XP SP2 (simple solution?)

M

Mister Tomato

I'm sure the answer is here, but there are thousands of ICS messages
to sort through. Summary: I have two PCs connected by ethernet, and
one PC, main, connected to the internet by USB cable modem. Everything
works fine, except the second PC can't access the internet! Any help
finding a quick answer?

Win XP/SP2 on both PCs, via the wizard, internet sharing is enabled on
PC1, and the laptop.

The laptop that is connected to my desktop via NICs using a crossover
cable. This works fine, I can read and write files between PCs from
either direction. For purposes of networking between PCs, I'm a happy
camper! Any help finding a quick answer why PC2 can't access the
internet? Buying more hardware is not an option. First is the
laptop's ipconfig, then the desktop's. TIA!

You can only have ICS enabled on one computer, the one that connects to the internet.

Thank you for the quick reply! I made mistake in my previous post.
ICS is on only the main PC.

Don't know if it will help you, but i had a similar problem with ICS.
Informations on M$ web site says that both computers workgroup name must be
set to MSHOME.NET, and after that, the Internet Connection Wizard will setup
the remaining parameters (on the second PC, not the one connected to the
modem)

Take a look at M$ knowlegde base, it has been very useful for me, maybe it
can be for you !

Changing MSHOME to MSHOME.NET shouldn't make any difference, but I
tried anyway. Elsewhere, I did make a little progress. If I enter the
actual IP numbers for a site on my client/laptop PC, not the
www.whateversite.com name, it works great! That is, it looks like the
DNS is not resolving www.whateversite.com into it's 999.999.999.999
IP numeric address. Is there a setting I should alter so that my
client PC uses the correct DNS?

Hey!!! SUCCESS!!! I manually entered the DNS numbers in my client, it
works great! Thanks for all the help, it kept me on the correct
path!! :))

the host I found by ipconfig/all, it works great! Thanks for all the
