Sounds like you may have pre-existing issues that you need to clean up
before you install SP2.

When was the last time you ran several antispyware applications to check
for/remove spyware?
When was the last time you ran an online antivirus scan - with an
application you currently do not have installed?
Have you gone through and verified you have the latest hardware drivers for
your system from each hardware manufacturer?
(May want to especially check motherboard chipset and network card
drivers.)
When was the last time you checked each of the applications you have
installed web pages and updated those with any downloadable updated they
offer?
When was the last time you ran a CHKDSK on your hard disk drives?
When was the last time you went through the add/remove programs control
panel and cleaned up unused/unknown applications?
(And/or used that to go to the software manufacturer's web pages and find
the latest versions of the software you have installed?)
When was the last defragmentation performed on your hard disk drives?

sp2 downloaded on a new install, new hdd and the rest of it to go with it,
downloaded all drivers for motherboard and others from their websites, had a
virus run online by microsoft just before install of sp2,
in short computer switched on installed xp,
installed internet connection,
then installed drivers for pc and software,
then installed sp2... then no internet
if all drivers had not downloaded properly wouldnt have they been affected
before the use of sp2?
and no spyware anti spyware or other internet protection installed ?
thankyou for your reply most greatfull cheers wardie

Try this open RUN command and type this:
netsh winsock reset click OK.
You may have TCP/IP damaged or corrupt after the updates try to uninstall
TCP/IP and reinstall it and see if other Internet connection there is also
installed.
