Hi,

I have a dual boot windows/linux laptop. My windows xp has some trouble
suddenlty with internet. Though my internet connect is fine (works
perfectly in my linux). I am clueless on where to even start the
trouble shooting. When I open IE or mozilla, it just doesn't display
anything. My network is detected though. Please help me trouble shoot
this problem.

Hello Ganesh,
You could do couple of things here:

From your issue I understand that your internet works fine on Linux and it
doesnt work in Windows XP.

1.) Boot your PC in Linux. Take a note of your IP Address, DNS address, DHCP
configuration.
2.) Compare these settings with Windows.

If the Windows machine has an IP Address which is similar to 169.XXX.XXX.XXX
then I think there is a problem with the DHCP server.

Before I go into more details I would like to ask you a couple of questions:
How do you connect to your internet?
What kind of internet connection you have?
Can you ping other computers on the network when you are on the Windows XP
machine?

The above questions would give me a clear picture of your internet and
networking environment and I and other users here can help you better.

Since your connection is fine in Linux, you know that the problem lies
with software - Windows.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Viruses and malware are the most common reasons for Internet
connectivity problems in Windows. Be sure the computer is clean:
