Hi

Got a weird problem here.
Have just moved house and so have changed my Internet connection from a fast
broadband service to a slow 56K dial-up service.
Whenever I connect to my ISP I am unable to run any applications.
They load into memory but they do not appear on screen and I know this
because they appear in the process list in task manager.
Only when I close the dial-up connection, a minute or so later do the
applications come to life.
This is a real pain.

Has anyone got any ideas ??

Hi Jim,

The issue may be caused by the software conflict. I have ever encounter
such issue.

Let's do the following steps.

1. Run msconfig to load the Microsoft Configuration Utility
2. Go to the Startup table
3. Uncheck all items
4. Click OK and restart the computer
5. Let's see whether we still encounter the error message
6. If yes, please recheck all and skip all rest steps
7. If no, let's add one item in the startup table and restart the computer
to see whether that one cause the problem
8. We can isolate the culprit very soon

Hi Steven,

Thanks for the advice, but it didn't change anything.
The problem is still there.
I thought the cause may be the modem as this is the only hardware I haven't
used for some time.
I updated the driver but the problem still occurs.

There could be a hardware conflict but I can't seem to find any.

There are two errors occuring in the system event log.
Could these be the problem?
They are:

1)
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 30/10/2003
Time: 18:23:29
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: DORIS
Description:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to
start the service IISADMIN with arguments "" in order to run the server:

2)
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000

Time: 18:24:59
User: N/A
Computer: DORIS
Description:
The mrtRate service failed to start due to the following error:

Hi Jim,

For the first DCOM 10005 error, it's caused by the Indexing Service. Let's
disable the service. This should solve the error.

To the second error, it's caused by the Quicken. If you have the
application installed, let's remove and then reinstall it. Let's see
whether this works.

Steven,

Sorry for the delayed reply.
I've fixed the error caused by Quicken.
The other, however, is not so easy.
You say its caused by the Indexing service, but this has been disabled on my
machine for some time now.
Also, I checked the server id in the registry and it relates to the
mousehook class.
What is the mousehook class?
I can't seem to find anything on it anywhere ??

Hi James,

This is happening since iisadmin hosts a DCOM server object, something is
CoCreate'ing the IISAdmin administration object. This will start just
iisadmin.
Since DCOM is unable to start IISAdmin it is causing this error. We can ask
DCOM not to start IISAdmin by going to

start>run>dcomcnfg>Applications tab>Double-click IISAdmin>Location
tab>Uncheck "Run application on this computer" and reboot with IISAdmin,
FTP, WWW and Indexing service disabled.
