internet connection lost

I have a new Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP Pro. Whenever my pc is
idle for several hours, I lose my internet connection. I have to re-boot. I
have the same ISP, same router and modem and never had this problem with my
older Dell. Another issue, possibly related is that more ofter than not when
I do try to access a web site I get a dialogue box that tellm me there is no
internet connection available and asks if I want to work off-line or try
again. Invariably, when I click "try again" I am connected.

In device manager right click your NIC..properties..power management tab and
be sure allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is not
checked.
