internet connection issues

cable modem
linksys wired router
1 machine running xp home (no problems connecting)
1 machine running xp pro (cannot connect to internet)
realtek ethernet adapter on xp pro box (tcp/ip set to
obtain ip address and dns automatically)

DHCP does not assign an IP address, if i set up the tcp/ip
manually i can ping the router successfully but cannot
access it through IE. All pages in IE come back as "page
not found"

Under IE's internet options connections tab, the "setup"
button is grayed out, so i am unable to access the new
connection wizard in IE. If i try to run the wizard,
inetwiz, manually i receive an "acces denied" error. I'm
log in as an administrator.

Also I believe that all the proper services are enabled.

sounds like a firewall issue or a services issue.

first bypass the router to make sure it isn't the issue.

make sure your firewall is disabled on the machine.

go to blackviper.com and research the services

he has a .reg file - DEFAULT PROALL which will set all your services
back to default and one that will set them to what he considers safe.

there are others also. NOTE there are different ones for HOME and PRO.

I would record (or export) with REGEDIT all the settings before
running defaultproall so you can replace them one at a time or you can
try the safe file.
I found the safe reg file works pretty well, but I had to make a few
mods to it.

if that doesn't do it - call BG.
good luck

.

double checked all the services as you suggested, and it
apears that all the needed services are running.

firewall is turned off and also tried with the cable modem
directly connected to the computer bypassing the router,
and still get the same results.

I'm really wondering if the problem with the internet
connection wizard might be causing the problem. As I
mentioned earler, in IE's internet options/connections,
the setup button is grayed out and manually running the
internet connection wizard results in an access denied
error. The user i'm logged on with is the administrator.
