Hi - I am trying to fix another computers Internet connection, I can
ping host names from command prompt, but as soon as I try to telnet to
port 80 or use Internet Explorer it fails straight away and just says
"page cannot be displayed". Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

If you can ping a website by name, such as www.google.com, then DNS is
configured properly. Check to ensure that there's no erroneous proxy
configured in your web browser. If that doesn't help, try downloading &
running WinSockFix - I usually get it from majorgeeks.com.

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
For Malwares download both these software:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Open a run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]

netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Or from here for winsock fixer:

Reboot your computer and see if you will be able to establish connection.
