Hi guys!

Yesterday I had the internet installed(BigPond cable) and since it was
connected, my computer has been rebooting when using the internet.
Does anyone else suffer this problem? And how do i fix?
I have installed service pack 1 and the critical updates that i was told
were required.
I am also running antivirus software(norton's)
I rang BigPond and they said it was a problem with Microsoft and i needed a
firewall program.

Any support/assistance would be fantastic!
Thanks everyone.

Rachel

if you went on the internet without firewall and virus
protection then you most likely have a virus and/or
spyware on your computer.
at the very least enable the built in xp firewall!
get adaware, spybot, spycop, spyware blaster. use any or
all of them to remove all junk.
then get a good virus program and keep it updated.

Always run a firewall and anti-virus programs on your computer at all times.

You are infected with the Blaster worm virus.

To stop the rebooting/shutdowns, right click on the task bar, choose task
manager, processes tab, look for msblast.exe. Highlight it and click end
process. Then turn on the xp firewall.

To turn on the firewall: control panel, network and internet connections,
network connections, right click your connection, properties, advanced tab,
check the protect my computer box. Do this as quickly as you can once the
desktop comes up. Then visit the sites below for the removal and patch info.

Also make sure to follow the links to the Microsoft pages for the patch or
visit windows update for the patch after you remove it.

Don't know - it's too technical for me. All I know is that if you connect to
the internet without a firewall and the particular patches, then poof! you
have blaster. You don't need to do anything, you just get it!

I dont run any firewalls on any of my pcs, all dialup. Maybe its a
broadband thing.

OR use common sense and dont install the virus/trojan to begin with.

Common sense......... we're talking about humans here, not
animals..............lol.
BTW - viri like blaster require the user to do nothing except connect to the
internet. Nothing to install. Common sense says have your firewall up and
running at all times your connected.

No blaster is not a broadband thing. You can get on dial up as well. You
have just been lucky, nothing more. And you probably have the patches
installed.

In laymans terms -- Viri like blaster go out and search the internet for
open ports. Just like a port scanner can do. When it finds an active ip
address with the ports not blocked(wide open - ie: no firewall), it then
attacks those ports and slips into your computer infecting it. Its that
simple to get.

If a copy of XP is installed without a firewall, and is not patched
before going on the Internet, it will be infected (even now) by the
Blast/Lovesan family within minutes. That does *not* need the user to
do anything, and happened to a highly professional friend of mine moving
from Win98
