Internet access through Ethernet port

I am having a problem getting to the internet through my Ethernet port. I
have an IBM Aptiva Pent 2 450 MHz and 128 mb running XP home edition. I can
get my Ethernet card(Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Managed Network Adapter)
working fine, the system recognizes it and it shows enabled but it won't let
me get to the internet. I am trying to go through a Cable modem which the
cable company says is working fine. There has to be something within xp that
I need to start to let the system use the Ethernet port... please help me as
I am at my wits end.

You need to set up a network connection using the ethernet adapter;
control panel, network setup wizard. However, if you have never
connected to the cable modem from the ethernet adapter before, reboot
the modem before you start the wizard. If you already have set up a
network connection, also reboot the modem.

Presumably you are currently connecting through a modem?

Have you changed you IE settings...

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings?
