Internet Access Problem

I'm sorry if this is not the most appropriate group to ask this.

I recently acquired a Win2000 computer that works very well except for
internet access. If I have it at work I can access the internet
through the company's LAN and even map network drives. When I bring it
home and connect it directly to my cable modem it cannot connect to the
outside world. I took it back to work and back home to make sure
nothing jarred loose in transportation. The same home connection works
on other computers.

I have done the following to no avail:
1) Installed an alternative (Mozilla) browser
2) Tried to ping www.google.com, cnn.com, etc.
3) Tried an different network card and installed its driver (before I
took it back to work)
4) In Internet Explorer, Tools Menu, Internet Options, Connections
Settings, LAN settings I made sure all boxes were not checked.
5) In Internet Explorer, Tools Menu, Internet Options, Advanced Tab I
set "restore defaults" button.

In light of all this I'm thinking this is a Windows setting, hence my
post.

The Win2000 5.00.2195, service pack 4.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Your cable modem is connected via ethernet?
You dont have a firewall blocking this connection?
You have reset the cable modem?
I believe certain cable connections require the PC to be registered with the
ISP before a connection will be allowed, thus is there an ISP specific
config.app?

Some cable modems require not only turning it off but unplugging for about 5
minutes in order to reset it.
Shut down computer, turn off cable modem, uplug the A/C cord.
Wait a few minutes, Plug the a/c cord back in, turn on the modem.
Confirm connection, then boot the computer.
