Internally-linked HTML files open in new window from temp directory without proper formatting

Whenever my system attempts to display an HTML file within, say, Visual
C++ (the help files, etc.), instead I get a popup notifing me that the
file is being downloaded to a temp directory, the window disappears,
and Firefox opens a new window with the content, except all the
formatting and links from that page are pretty much unusable. It's
preventing me from loading any help pages in software like C++, and I
cannot figure out what's wrong.

I had an old windows install on my C: drive, and currently I run off
the G: windows xp install. I replaced the hhctrl.ocx in the old windows
install with the new one, just in case for some reason my system is
calling that file. I tried switching default browsers back to IE,
didn't work.

Here is a screenshot of what happens after I click "How do I?" in the
Help menu of Visual C++ (the same type of thing happens with pretty
much any software that opens html help files:

If you notice, the address bar is pointing to a temp directory in my
profile (I've blocked out eh name for security, heh), and there are
three tabs that are opened as a result - "(Untitled)", which is blank,
"Loading Online Help...", which clearly was supposed to load inside the
internal help viewer in C++ 2005, and the displayed tab, which has no
formatting, and the links, when you try to click them, give you file
not found errors.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think I've solved it.

I replaced the shdocvw.dll file in my old windows install with the one
from my new one. so far no problems.
