internal 1394 connector

I have a 1394 port on my front pannel. The wires are nicely labeled---but
they are INDIVIDUAL wires. So they need to be sorted out and connected to
the right pin.

My motherboard does have an internal 1394 nine-pin connector. Looking
straight at the mother board, it looks like this:

* * * * *
* * * *

Unfortunately, I don't know the identity (pin order) of this type of internal
connector. So I'm left to guess which wire goes to which pin. Can anyone
help?

Does your motherboard have a brand name and a model number ? Maybe you can
use that info to track down a manual for it.

I really wouldn't "guess" at it, because there is +12V present on the
connector. If you connect an expensive device (DV camera), you could
blow it to hell if you get the wiring wrong, and it might cost hundreds
of dollars to fix. Better to just buy a PCI Firewire card, than to take
a chance on your average Firewire toy being ruined.

There is some guidance here on pinout patterns, but these guys don't know
all the answers. There is always some motherboard maker that doesn't
follow the rules, and it would be just your luck to run into one of
them. Which is why a search for the manual is the first thing to try -
if you cannot find the manual, just buy a Firewire card with a connector
on the faceplate.
