For the last year I have tollerated extremely slow (sometime zero) download
speeds on one of my PCs which has Windows2000 installed and is using a USR
56 professional message modem. Sometimes the connection speed is fine and
working at full throttle, and other times near zero. I have blamed this on
ISP connections and possibly a fault developed in the modem which always
used to work fine.
However, I can connect my XP laptop to the same telephone socket and it
nearly always works at full speed.
Also I recently replaced the USR modem (which died) with a cheap USB modem,
expecting this to work fine, but I was surprised to find that it had the
same problem as the USR modem.
My only conclusion is that the problem lies in some bad settings in the
Windows 2000 installation on my PC.
Are there any utilities which will check for problems in any modem-related
settings and change to them to sane values?
Thanks
