Intermittent Internet Connectivity: XP Pro (SP2) on an NT domain

After receiving a critical update from Microsoft, I noticed that an SP2
hotfix was installed on my computer. At the time of the install the XP
computers on my LAN were still running SP1.

Intermittent Internet connectivity issues began immediately afterwards.
Until now, I have been disabling the network LAN connection in "My network
places" periodically throughout the day then Re-enabling it a short time
afterwards.

At any rate, I have re-installed the entire SP2 download and turned on the
firewall and automatic update features in the control panel. I am still
having the internet drop offs.

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Problem may be elsewhere than in SP2. I have a few XP Pro systems, with SP2,
and have no problems with my NT 4.0 domain.

I have stayed current with all updates and still cannot go a day without
resetting my LAN connection to get some access to the Internet. Connectivity
to my local LAN and notes e-mail remains uninterrupted. I am running
Symantec Anti-virus without firewall. Any ideas as to what is causing the
problem?

Also, I have run msconfig and disabled all services except for windows
related services to ensure that nothing is interrupting connectivity
(Symantec products and live updates).

The problem persists.

Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Well, normally by now I would have re-imaged the PC if a problem like this
continued. But I have come up with a work around until I get a permanent fix
for the problem.. It seems as long as I keep a shortcut to my LAN connection
Icon in “My Network Places: open on my desktop and disable the connection
then re-enable the connection before going to the next web page or refresh, I
can get around on the internet.

The problem is reminiscent to what would happen to your sound card or mouse
if your were sharing a com port or an IRQ resource. The functionality of the
device in question sort of goes in and out all day long until you resolve
whatever conflict.

Unfortunately for me, there are no conflicts on my PC and the problem is
affecting other people on the network who are in the same boat.

Any Ideas from anyone out there would be appreciated.

On SP1, there was an internet connection manager that gave you the option to
set the time interval for when the internet connection would refresh itself
or to shut it off. Where is that dialog box in XP2?

Actually, on second thought, the problem appears to be with the Internet
Connection firewall (ICF). On SP1 you could set the interval for when the
connection would be re-established. that feature is not present in SP2.

Could this be why I continue to have problems with Internet connectivity?
It would make since because I am able to manually re-establish connectivity
with the LAN by disable/enable.

Well, I called Dell today as well as the manufacturer of the LAN card. The
only possible work-around to this problem was suggested to me by one of my
users. He suggested that we try a PCI LAN card instead of using the
integrated card that is in all of the affected machines (Broadcom NetXtreme
57xx Gigabit controller).

To date, no one from Microsoft, Dell or Broadcom has been able to understand
the problem, let alone repair it. Which only opens up the door that an
application is somehow interfering with the connectivity of the NIC.

I am at a loss.
