Lost internet connectivity after installing XP SP2

Had been installing all of the security patches on a newly rebuilt system
after doing a repair install to transfer an existing hard drive to a new
motherboard. Things were really starting to work well. Even got XP SP2
loaded. It rebooted and seemed to work afterwards. I had to go do other
things, so I shut it down and didn't start back on it for a few days. Now
it boots fine... everything is cool, and it even gets an IP address from my
router when I do an IPCONFIG /Release followed by /Renew... so it is
getting out on the network.

Problem... I cannot get out on the internet suddenly. I can't even ping
known sites in a command window.

I ran virus scans, spyware scans, etc... no problems.

The system is running like a hose. It just can't "see" anything anymore.
For some reason searching the MS Knowledge base to actually get useful
information has become futile.... at least it hardly comes up with anything,
even when I am vague (so it should have come back with 40 or 50 entries).

Anyway, does the above connectivity issue sound familiar? Help would
sincerely be appreciated!

System config:

DFI LanParty nF4 Ultra-D
AMD Athlon64 3200+
XFX gForce 6600 DDR 256 (PCI+) video
2- 512Mb PC3200 CL3 Kingston DIMMs (KVR400X64C3A/512) (in sockets DDR1 &
DDR2 of Channel A)
Existing EIDE 120 Gb SD Drive.
CDR/W & CD drives.
Iomega Zip 100 Internal.
FDD.
built-in Gigabit ethernet, using the VITESSE VSC8201 Gigabit Phy socket (vs
the LAN2(Gigabit PCI) )

I also tried switching which Gigabit socket I used, but that did not seem to
help.

TIA!

Google for winsockxpfix.exe. Run it to repair the TCP/IP stack.

If still no joy...

Interestingly, when I was doing IPCONFIG it would show info from my router.
Release and renew would blank out and then replace the values for the IP
address, however I could not ping anything.

Ran a copy of WinsockXPfix.exe that I'd had to help out a friend with his PC
a while back and that fixed it. Was then able to download & install the
rest of the Windows updates.... runs great now.

Thanks, all!
