I am having a problem with my internet connection dying intermittently where
I have to reboot to get my connection back. This has been going on for a
couple of months and I can't really think of anything that I did that might
cause the problem. I have downloaded sp2 so I'm not sure if that's the issue
or not. I can't remember if the problems started before or after that. My
ISP says the problem is not on their end. The loss of connectivity occurs
randomly whether I'm sending an e-mail or not doing anything. Alot of the
time I find my connection has been lost overnight. If anyone has any
suggestions please let me know! Do I need to go by a new NIC? Thanks in
advance, Kat

You didn't say how you connect to the Internet, but I assume you have
cable or dsl since you mention a NIC. Here are some things to try,
doing one thing at a time and testing after each change:

1. If you use a router, connect the machine temporarily directly to the
cable/dsl modem. Does the connection stay solid now? If yes, then you
know the router needs to be replaced.

2. If you use XP, look at the NIC's properties in Device Manager and
make sure that Windows is not allowed to use Power Saving on that
device.

3. Swap out the cable for a known-good one.

4. Swap out the NIC for a known-good one.

5. Look in Event Viewer for clues if you have XP or Win2k.

6. It could also be a failing cable/dsl modem. Have the provider replace
it.

Thanks for your help. I checked the device manager and the the box was
checked for power saving. I unchecked that and will wait to see if that was
the problem. Thanks again.

You're very welcome. Let's hope that does it. ;-)
