Insuficent Memory or disc space

I recently purchased a Dell 4100 Inspioion operating on
Windows XP. I tried to create a document in Word and a
message tells me that " there is insuficent memory or
disc space" The "system properties" on my computer tells
me that I have 31.49 GB of which only 5.73 GB is in use.
It has 256 MM(Memory) RAM. Where do I go from here?
