Installingn HD on USB

R

RedFox8391

I need to know if I can install an Internal HD (IDE) on a external case
(USB/FIREWIRE) and install/boot winxp-pro from it or other OS like
Linux, can I do it? and will it run like a dual boot system?
Laptop w/Centrino 1.7GH and WinXp-Pro installed, 1GB Ram.

TIA,

yes.

either get an 3.5" USB HDD IDE external enclosure. or a 3.5" USB2-IDE
adaptor

USB2-IDE adaptor is very cool. It's a cable with USB one end and IDE
other end. + a power adaptor with a 4 pin molex on it so it plugs into
the HDD like a PSU does - same 4 pin molex connector.

Enclosure isn't necessary. It's like a box with a fan and a USB2-IDE
adaptor in it.
I guess it could keep the HDD more steady.

You can certainly put an OS on there. I've heard of people running OSs
off a pen drive / usb key. I haven't done it. It's very googlable.
It'd be interesting to see what people say here about it..
There is Win XP PE too.

XP will not allow installation onto a USB, Firewire, Parallel or networked
hard drive.

this page is quite clear regarding the usb hack
http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176

dunno what you mean by networked hdd, Ig uess you don't mean SAN/NAS.
It's not a MS thing. And it's very very specialised and probably quite
new and rare. So i'm sure you don't mean that.
I know in windows you can share folders/directories.
do you mean install windows to a partition the whole of which is
"shared"? when installing xp and prob any NT, it deletes whatever
windows is on there. so i don't see what you mean.

dunno what a "parallel" hard drive is either. you don't mean PATA
obviously 'cos people have done it on PATA/IDE for well over a decade,
as the standard option for installing windows - there was only that and
SCSI !

I don't necesserally need to run XP from the HD, I will probably install
a version of linux like Ubunbtu, but I need to know for sure if I can
run XP from the HD IDE through the USB, I already have a external HD
installed but I learned the hard way that I can not install a OS in it,
does not have the right driver for it installed or so the maker said
(Acomdata), has I have a laptop, I was told that a regular IDE HD on a
external 3.5 case would do the trick.
When I had a desktop, I installed 6 HDrives and installed 2 versions of
XP-pro, 98se, WinMe and it did not give me any problems.

Just need some good info on this, one way or the other, I don't want to
buy the more expensive 2.5 drives and have to keep switching it in and
out off the laptop.

Thanks for the advice,

Redfox
