Installing XP

I am trying to install XP Home on an old Compaq (400 MHz). I have formatted
the HD and installed XP but when it gets to the XP boot screen (with the blue
scrolling progress bar) it freezes. I can then turn off the computer and
boot in safe mode just fine but I don't know what the problem is so I don't
know where to start. Any suggestions?

If you can boot oK in safe mode then that would suggest a hardware or driver
problem. Did you run the Upgrade Advisor before starting the install?

No, I did not. I have never heard of the Upgrade Advisor. Where is it,
what does it do, and how do I use it?

It's on the XP CD........Boot into Safe mode, and run the XP CD. You should
see it as an option.

Gordon,

I found the Upgrade Advisor and used it. It said that there were no
incompatibilities but it still didn't work. I reinstalled Win98SE and looked
in the devise manager to see if there were any conflicts. The NIC (NetGear)
was having problems so I took it out and put in a more generic one. That did
the trick. I was able to completely boot XP everything works. Thanks for
the help.

What are the specs of the system you are trying to install XP on? Does it
meet the minimum requirements? (Which actually are well BELOW the
requirements to have XP running satisfactorily)?
