I now have OS 98 on the PC. I'm going to reformat C or should
say have to. Ten years of use and probable lots of bugs... Then I'm
going to install XP Pro. My question is should I do a clean installation
of XP or should I install 98 then upgrade????

Second question is: I have noticed that my XP-Pro labeling on the
box
said "Microsoft Windows XP Professional [Old Version]". Could any one
address this for me? This PC will be a storage and back up PC replacing
and old Acer I have..............Thank You Very much

Clean install is the BEST way to go, since you are already planning to
reformat the hard drive best let XP do the format.

I have never heard of XP Professionnal [Old Version]. Are you sure it is a
legit version???

First backup any information before doing anything.

Second make sure that your system is XP compat and you can do this by
running the XP Cd within windows 98. If all ok you can do either
Upgrade/Fresh Clean Install.

Preferably i would do a Fresh Clean Install, as the little problems that
existed before the upgrade (on your windows 98) are likely to make the
transition right along with the new operating system.

But if you do an upgrade XP has the function to do an UNINSTALL so you can
revert back to windows 98..

Your Call..

Cheers

If you are serious that this computer has been in use for 10 (!!!)
years, then it is extremely unlikely that it will be able to run XP.
What are its hardware specs?

I don't know to what the "[Old Version"] refers, but it doesn't sound
like you have a retail copy of XP. Where did you get it and what does
the box look like?

Several points here:

1. A ten-year-old computer is *highly* unlikely to be capable of
running Windows XP with anything approaching acceptable
performance. What are its specs?

2. In most situations I recommend doing an upgrade to XP rather
than a clean installation. Unlike with previous upgrades, the XP
upgrade replaces almost everything, and normally works very well.
Moreover, even if it doesn't, you still have the option of doing
a clean installation.

3. The one situation where I *don't* recommend upgrading is when
you have existing problems with the old operating system. You say
"probable lots of bugs," but's it's difficult for me assess what
the current state is from that. You might still want to back up
your data and try the upgrade, since you can always do a clean
installation if it fails.

4. You ask "should I do a clean installation of XP or should I
install 98 then upgrade?" There's no advantage to reinstalling
98, then upgrading. It's just double work. If you want a clean
installation, do a clean installation.

"Old Version"? Are you sure? Where did you get this? There's no
box with that label.

Thank you all for your response and advice. The old version stands
for an early release "Version 2002" I got from (BuyPCsoft though
Amazon) and came in a box as one would find at BestBuy. My PC
is a CompaqPresario 5600, 450 Pen II, 256 Ram, and bug's. I go to
HouseCall allot but I was having trouble and this last time It found
12 browser defects. So I just decided to do XP as I have a new Sony
with XP on it that I use for back up(I'm just so use to this old ComPaq)
I've put together a boot disk and can run everything in DOS but I'll
let XP wizard reformat. My Compac set-up disk does the same....
And Thanks Again... Gene Ð......Greenfield Wi

"COMPAQ'S NEW PRESARIO 5600 is a monstrous machine. In fact, it may be too
much PC for many home office users, considering its awesome features. Under
the hood of this sleek, stylized unit is a 400MHz Pentium II processor,
128MB of RAM, and a 12.9GB hard disk. But aside from these beefy numbers,
you also have a second-generation DVD drive, a 56Kbps V. 90 modem, and an
Ethernet card to play with. Not impressed yet? Compaq wisely placed two USB
ports and an IEEE-1394 FireWire port on the front of the computer for easy
peripheral access."

Even with this glowing review from 1998 and the $2700 purchase price, I
would not waste my money installing XP on a system now worth less than the
price of the XP upgrade.

Windows 2000 would probably work very well, but I would backup all important
data and download all updates, then restore to the original shipped state.
Reinstall the basic minimum software you use on the system and network it
with your Sony.
