The installation hangs on "setup is starting windows" and
nothing I do will make it continue I have reformatted my
HD but have not reinstalled 98SE (waiting for the promt to
insert the disc)any help would appreciated

A piece of advice avoid upgrading like the plague if at all possible always
try and run from scratch using the XP set-up disks. You can download them
from http://www.bootdisk.com you will need 6 blank formatted floppy disks to
accomplish this.
