Installing XP to a SATA hard drive

Steve

I have a Dell Dimension 4500. It only allows booting from a floppy, CD,
or IDE hard drive. If I install a SATA PCI interface and a SATA hard
drive, can XP be installed on it, and will I be able to boot from it?

You should be able to. During the XP install you will be given the chance to
install drivers by pressing the F6 key.
Most likely you will be required to do this, so make sure you have the
necessary driver disk.

Yes, most all of them (PCI SATA controllers) have both boot
capability and are RAID configurable. When the PC is booted
you'll see a POST (Power on Self-Test) by the SATA card to
detect/display the connected devices.

I use an AcomData kit that included an external SATA drive,
the PCI Card and cable. It most definitely can be used to load
Operating Systems, as I use it to test an upcoming version of
Windows. Last time I checked CompUSA sells them, believe
the cost has dropped to around ~$160. The external enclosure
houses a Western Digital SATA-I physical drive.

Sure - if the BIOS has an option in the Boot Order page to select a Bootable
Add-In Device: and then has an option for PCI Slot Device. (This is how you
select the PCI card and make it bootable.)

Hope it helps.

I read the article, does not say what to do if there is no floppy in your
system....I would like to know.

Thanks.

Hi,

The problem is: Normally, at this point, floppy is the only device you can
access. Otherwise, how can you find the SATA drivers?
