Greetings. A couple of years ago, after installing a seemingly minor
hotfix to XP (q317277) to fix occasional erroneous error messages at
boot time, the system in question started freezing up every few
minutes (it took considerable time and effort to make this connection,
however!) Turns out a lot of people have reported the same problem.
I removed the hotfix, the system stabilized, and the error messages
haven't been a problem.
I avoided installing SP1 out of concerns that the same "fix" would
find its way back into the system. Recently, since I required a new
patch that depends upon SP1, I decided to chance it.
No luck. As I had predicted, the system started freezing up again in
the same manner as before. I have now removed (more or less, there's
still a bit of instability) SP1 (and I just lucked out keeping the
system up long enough to accomplish that...)
But is there any way past this point? Is there any practical method
to install SP1 and then remove the negative effects of the equivalent
q317277 patch that obviously is included within SP1 itself, without
removing the remainder of SP1?
As it stands, this is something of a brick wall for an otherwise
perfectly good system. Any suggestions appreciated! I'd appreciate
copies of any responses to my e-mail address if possible. Thanks very
much.
