Installing xp service pack 2

I tried installing SP2 about 4 months ago and again today. After downloading
SP2 and rebooting, all goes well and the desktop eventually appears. About
10 seconds later all the program icons disappear along with the start button.
All that's on the screen is the desktop background picture. (Can get into
Task Manager, but still no way to get to reset.) Is there a way to solve this
problem?

In task mgr,"new task" type:CMD In cmd type:CHKDSK C: Then you might
type:CLEANMGR If xp restores desktop,type:EXIT Usually before the SP2
installation,open cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,type:EXIT Then
install SP2
