Installing xp pro upgrade from Mfg. Disk

Luke Cesnik

When trying to install windows XP Pro upgrade on a Windows
98SE. I get the following error.

Setup cannot your current installtion to Windows XP.
Your copy of windows XP does not support upgrading from an
evaluation copy of windows.

Setup cannot continue.

How can I get around this. The computer I am trying
upgrade is running a legal copy of windows 98 SE. The
Product Key label says Compaq Computers on it. This
computer is not a Compaq.

Is there a way around this or do I have to return this
product and get a different one?

Apparently, you acquired an "OEM version" of Windows XP.
OEM versions are not designed to upgrade an existing Windows
installation. It must be installed on a reformatted drive.
Only "retail versions" of Windows XP have the ability to upgrade.
