Installing XP home over XP Pro

My version of XP Pro has not been validated as authentic, as the pc didn't
come with the discs I bought XP Home. Is there a way to install Home without
losing all the files and settings i already have?

You cannot install Windows XP Home Edition over an existing
Windows XP Professional installation. A "clean install" of
Windows XP Home Edition is required.

I've been looking for this information all day. I have a dell that fried last
night...been fine up to then....and now it tells me that things are
corrupted, won't start up etc. I had a xp pro installed, but it came with,
don't have the discs. I do have a bona fide version of xp home I can install.

My question: before it gets to the part where it says "perform additional
tasks" and I can transfer my files, etc. will it already have erased them? It
sounds naive....but that's what it says it's going to do in the blue screen,
before I get to that point.

REALLY appreciate your help if it comes. looked at your site. thanks
