Hi there

I have an "IBM Thinkpad R50" laptop with a 40GB harddisk, and a functioning
Windows XP installation.

Now I want to replace the 40GB harddisk with a 60GB harddisk. So I remove
the 40GB harddisk from the system, and insert the 60GB drive istead. Then I
put the Windows XP installation CD in the CD-drive, and start the machine.

But the Windows XP installation program says it cannot detect any
harddisks - why could this be, and how do I get Windows installation to see
the harddisk?

I know the disk does function as I have used it as data storage via USB. So
either windows installation is doing something wrong, or maybe a Thinkpad
cannot handle a 60GB drive? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter

Hi,

Is it seen in the system BIOS? And are you sure the connectors are fully
seated? How is it being connected?

Well, no. I remember from the good old days that the BIOS showed
IDE/harddisks, but it appears no more. I can't find anywhere in the BIOS
that refers to IDE connector.

Yes, I am sure that the harddisk is physically seated correctly in the
internal connector of the laptop.

might load the original restore CD
then after its installed plug in your winxp disk

You need to "tell" the BIOS how to access the hard drive. I never seen a
"normal" PC/laptop where I can not tell the BIOS the drive parameters.

Well, this is the problem. If it is not recognized, then either a connection
is bad or the drive is.

That's not going to help the OP because his hard drive isn't being seen.
