Installing Windows XP

Here is the problem:

I am attempting to do a clean install of Windows XP on my wife's hp pavilion
xt953 the is currently running Windows 2000 (so I can not use an upgrade).
The keyboard is a PS/2 keyboard not a USB keyboard.

Everything moves along fine then it tells me that it is going to restart the
computer the computer restarts fine and it goes thru and at the bottom of the
screen you can see that it is loading things (while this is going on my
keyboard is still functional and the cap lock light is on) then the keyboard
lights go out and I get a screen that says welcome to setup with the options
to >press enter to setup windows know, >pres R to repair a XP installation or
press F3 to exit

The problem is that none of them work!!! My keyboard is dead until I reboot
then it works fine and gets me back to the same screen.

HELP How can I get past this??????????

Thanks
TJ

Windows 2000 can be "upgraded" to XP. For info "Microsoft support
service -article ID #316941".
