Hi,
I just got a new Dell laptop with XP. I have gateway
with Windows 98. In order to get the Gateway wireless,
it has to have Windows XP on it. Am I allowed to install
the Windows XP on the gateway that came with the Dell?
What is the best way to go about doing this?

Please email me.
Thanks,
Erin

No, the XP that came with your Dell is for that computer alone. You'll need
to buy a WinXP upgrade for the Gateway - make sure the hardware can support
it and you have all the needed drivers.

I think not. Your windows disk will only work on the computer it came loaded
on. The gateway is probibly not fast enough for XP even if you purchased a new
version of XP.

That is part of the point. If you nkow how, you can get the XP setup
files, but you still need to get a second license for the other
computer.

You cannot install one copy of XP on two computers. But Win98SE should
be able to run a wireless adapter, you don't need to upgrade to XP
just for that.

It might depend on whether the manufacturer of the adapter you're
using supplies Win98SE drivers. They *should*, but that doesn't mean
that they *do*.

No.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems, it's
necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and copyright laws,
if not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on
which it is installed. The only way in which WinXP licensing differs
from that of earlier versions of Windows is that Microsoft has finally
added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation,
to prevent (or at least make more difficult) multiple installations
using a single license.
