Hi, i'm from Portugal, and i am trying to install Windows 2000 Professional
Service Pack 4 without success. I make the boot by the CD, he starts to copy
the files to my hard disk, then it reboots and remains blocked without
anything on the screen. The cursor stays blinking in the left top of the
screen, and there it stays indefinetly.
If i try to install the XP, i have no problems, thow, with the 2000, i can't
do anything. I already tried in two different machines without success.
What shall i do ??? Please help me. I need to install the 2000, because i
have applications that doesn't work with XP. Thanks. John

A blinking cursor in the top left-hand corner is often a sign of
one of the following:
- The partition is not set to "active"
- You have loaded Win2000 onto a logical partition instead of
a primary partition.
- The disk not the primary master disk. It is a slave disk or
a secondary master disk.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Hi again, none of those reasons are the problem, can you think of anything
else?
Greetings,
John

In this situation I would drop back to a very basic situation
and do this:
- Boot with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Create a 32 GByte FAT32 partition with fdisk.exe.
- Format the partition like so: format c: /u /s
- Boot the machine with the hard disk. Does it boot?
- Install Win2000 in this partition. Does the problem persist?

The results should tell you a few interesting things.
