Installing Window XP over Windows 98 SE

Carole Molina

I am purchasing a new desktop computer with Windows XP
Professional. I have a laptop that has Windows 98, and I
would like to upgrade that computer to XP Professional. I
think that the license agreement for XP says that I can
install the software on both a desktop computer and a
laptop computer if I am the primary user of both
computers. Is it possible for me to use the XP
Professional CD that comes with the new desktop to install
Windows XP on the laptop? Or, is it necessary for me to
purchase an XP Professional CD that says that it is
specifically for the purpose of upgrading from Windows 98?

If Windows XP comes preinstalled on a new computer, it is
an "OEM Version". OEM Versions are non-transferable to
another computer since the license is "permanently bound" to
that specific computer. Therefore it will not install, nor activate,
on any other computer.

You should read your EULA:

To access the License Agreement on your XP computer, go to:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Then click on "End-User License Agreement".

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

You'll need to purchase a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP
in order to upgrade your laptop.
