Installing Win XP Pro?

My computer is in dire need of having windows XP pro reinstalled on it. The
disc that came with it has w xp pro on it. When I try to reinstall xp it says
the version on my computer is newer than the one on the disc, Is this because
I added SP/2 at a later date? If I remove SP/2 would my disc work to
reinstall XP then? I have a disc with SP/2 so I could reinstall it again,
Right? I'm trying to keep from doing a total restore and loose everything.
Big pain to start over. Thanks for any help you can give me.

That's because you are trying to install while in windows.

Boot *from* the CD - and then you can WIPE everything - no matter what OS is
there - because you can (and if you are trying to do a clean installation -
SHOULD) delete the partitioning and create new partitioning on the drive in
question.

Otherwise you won't be doing much of anything - even if you bothered to
slipstream SP2 into your Windows XP CD (Google that.)

First off, if your current XP installation is in such bad
shape, a repair installation may not make all that much
difference.

That said, you have two options. First. uninstalling SP2 from
your current installation should allow you to use your XP
installation CD. An alternative approach would be to create
what's called a "slipstreamed" installation CD.

Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP

Here are some of the files you'll need to obtain in order to
follow this procedure:
